Gary McGill Scholarship

See these pages for information on the Jack Sims and Rob Habkirk Harmony Awards

Gary was not only a talented musician and singer, he was a true gentleman and never said an unkind word or raised his voice in anger. He really loved music and enjoyed both performing and directing.

Gary held a Master of Arts Degree in Music Performance from Western Washington University and UBC. He was affiliated with the Kirby Singers for 20 years and was involved in many shows with Metro and Heritage Musical Theatre.

Garys introduction to the Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society was as music director for Jack and the Beanstalk in 1988. As well as Jack and the Beanstalk he was our music director for 6 other productions: Sing a Song of Sixpence (1991), Ruddigore (1992), The Grand Old Duke of York (1992), The Gondoliers (1993), Aladdin (1993), and Frankenstein, The Panto (1994). As well, Gary was one of the music directors for our Backburners choral group.

Gary was scheduled to be our music director for The Pirates of Penzance in 1995 until he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February. Unfortunately Gary passed away on the opening night of Pirates in May 1995.

Gary had a beautiful baritone voice and was seen on our stage in Princess Ida (1989) as Arac, Archibald Grosvenor in Patience (1990), Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. Pinafore (1991), and Captain Corcoran in Utopia Limited (1994). He also performed with our Backburners choral group. One of the most memorable songs he sang was The Gypsy Rover and he sang a stirring rendition of They call the wind, Mariah.

Gary served on our Board of Directors for 4 years from 1990 to 1994. When Gary was on the board of directors one of the tasks he helped co-ordinate was to establish our societys show scholarship. When he died in 1995, it was decided to dedicate the existing scholarship in his name. Gary enjoyed working with young people very much and it is a fitting legacy to have the Gary McGill scholarship award named in his honour.

This Scholarship is open to any cast or crew member to assist them in attaining their goals in their chooses field relating to the arts.

The DIRECTOR, MUSIC DIRECTOR, CHOREOGRAPHER AND PRODUCER, picks the recipient. The selection committee will be looking not only at the skills and talents of the applicant, but at attitude, cooperation and participation in all aspects of rehearsal, attendance, performance and other duties that need to be done.

The scholarship is in the form of a cheque for $350 to be given to a training facility directly.
